Fractal and Graphics Software


If you are interested in making fractals, I have compiled a list with links to fractal software that you can download.  Some are free while others cost money.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me.  This is not a comprehensive list of all the fractal software that's ever been made.  I have left some out unintentionally.  If you can think of one or some I may have missed, please let me know and I will add them to this list.

JWildfire - free software used to make flame fractals (I've used this one since 2017.)  (Windows and Mac)  (The Windows version needs a separate JAVA installer.)

JWildfire Mini - free software used to make flame fractals.  (I have not used this one.  Its functionality is limited compared to the desktop edition listed directly above.)  (Android)

JWildfire Swan - free random flame fractal generator that is web-based.

Flamelet - software used to make flame fractals.  This software costs $3.99 USD.  (iOS)

Fractorium - free software used to make flame fractals.  It is GPU accelerated.  (I have not used this one, yet.)  (Windows, MacOS, Linux)

Chaotica - software used to make flame fractals.  This software costs €89.00 EUR.  There is a less expensive version.  Please see the website for details.  (I have not used this one.) (Windows)

Fractal Architect - software used to make flame fractals.  This software costs $9.99 for the iOS version and Fractal Architect 5 for the MacOS costs $19.99.  Fractal Architect X for the MacOS is free.

Apophysis 7X - free software used to make flame fractals (I used this one from 2005 to 2017.)   (Windows)

Apophysis 2.09 - free software used to make flame fractals (I used this one from 2005 to 2017.)  (Windows)

Apophysis 3D Hack - free software used to make flame fractals (I used this one in the past from 2005 to 2017.)  (Windows)

Ultra Fractal 6.04 - the version I use costs $99 USD.  There are less expensive versions.  See the website for details.  (I've been using this since 2019, although I briefly used an earlier version of Ultra Fractal in 2005.)  (Windows)

Jux 3.5 - this software costs $24 USD to register, allowing you to render at higher resolutions.  You can still use it for free, although you are limited to 640x480 anti-aliased rendering.  (I've used this since August of 2020.)  (Windows)

Mandelbulb 3D - free software used to make 3D fractals  (I've used this one since December 5, 2017.)  (Windows)

Mandelbulber - free software used to make 3D fractals  (I used this briefly in 2019.  I plan to use it again.)  (Windows)

Chaoscope 0.3.1 - free software used to make 3D strange attractors (I've used this one since 2005.)  (Windows)

FFExplorer - software by the FractalFun Project.  (I used this one in 2019.  I plan to use it again.)  (Windows) 

Fragmentarium - free software for Windows and Mac.  (I used this briefly in 2019 but found it difficult to use, because it seems to require some computer programming skills, and I have forgotten most of what I learned in college about computer programming.)  (Sign-up for a free account on Fractalforums to access this website.)

Frax - there is a free version for iOS and a version that costs just a small amount of money that is in higher resolution.  (I've used this since 2019.)

Incendia - free software used to make 3D fractals.  There is an option to donate to the creator to encourage updates.  (I've not used this one.  I have downloaded it, however, and plan on using it soon.)  (Windows)

Kaleider - software used to make images similar to fractals.  The trial version is free and it costs $28 after the trial period ends.  There are other graphics programs available for trial and purchase at this website.  (I used Kaleider briefly in 2019 and plan to use it again.)  (Windows)

Mandel Machine - free software for Windows.  (I used this briefly in 2019 and plan to use it again.)

Mirror Lab - fun photo-editing software for Android.  It's free and has in-app purchases.  (I used this one briefly in 2019.  I plan to use it again.)

QuickMAN - free software for Windows.  (I have not used this one, yet.  I have downloaded the software, though.)

Fractal eXtreme - this software costs $9.95.  There is a time-limited free version, to allow you to give it a try.  (I have not used this one.)  (Windows)

Visions of Chaos - free software for Windows and Android with an option to donate.  (I used this briefly in 2019.  I plan to use it again.)

Xenodream - 3D modeling and fractal software.  This one costs $89 USD.  (I have not used this one.)

Electric Sheep - collaborative abstract artwork software for Windows, Linux, MacOS X, iPad, Android, AppleTV.  There is a free version.  The HD version costs money.  (I have not used this one.)

Tiera-Zon - free software for Windows.  (I have not used this one, although I have downloaded it.)

GAPFixFractal - free software for Windows.  (I have not used this one.)  See the latest release of GAPFizFractal 0.2, released on April 17, 2021.

Fractal Explorer - free software for Windows.  (I have not used this one, although I used another Fractal Explorer that is listed directly below this one.)

Fractal Explorer 2.02 - free software for Windows.  This is a different Fractal Explorer than the one listed directly above.  (I used this briefly in 2019.  I plan to use it again.)  (You may need to be a member of DeviantArt to download this.  DeviantArt is free unless you sign-up for their premium membership.)

XaoS - free software for Windows, Linux, and Mac.  (I have not used this one, but I plan to use it.)

ChaosPro - free software for Windows.  (I have not used this one, but I plan to try it.)

Mind Boggling Fractals Lite - Free software for Windows.  Mind Boggling Fractals is no longer available but you can download the Lite version HERE.  (See Amazing Seattle Fractals)  (I've not used the LITE version, but I did use the full version in 2019.)

Sterling 2 - free software for Windows.  (I have not used this one, but I have downloaded it and plan on trying it.)

ChaosPro - free software for Windows.  (I briefly used this in August of 2020.  I plan on using it again.)

FractalNow - free software for Windows.  (I have not used this one.  I plan on trying it.)

Fractal Fr0st - free software for Windows.  (I have not used this one.  I plan on trying it.)

Fractalizer - software for Android and iOS.  The iOS version is $1.99 and the Android version is $2.26.  (I have used this one since 2019.)

Kalles Fraktaler 2 - free software for Windows.  (I have not used this one.)

GIMP - free image editor for Windows, OS X, Linux, and more systems.  This software does not make fractals but you can do cool things with your fractals using this software.  (I've used GIMP since 2017.)

Terragen - a fractal terrain generator for Windows and Mac OS X.  It's free for non-commercial use.  If you want to use it for commercial purposes, there is an option to buy it.  The price list is HERE.  (I have not used this one, but I plan to use it.)

Daz3D software - software used for 3D modeling.  Prices are listed on the website.  (I have not used this.)

Irfanview - free graphics viewer software for Windows.  It's free for non-commercial use.  (I have used this since 2019.)

Paint.net - photo and image editing software for windows.  It is free.  (I have used this since 2019.)

Topaz Studio 2 - creative photo-editing software for Windows.  It costs $99 USD.  (I have used this since 2019.)

PaintShop Pro - photo-editing software for Windows.  It costs $79.99.  There are more expensive versions with more functions.  Please see the website for more details.  (I have used this since 2019.)

Adobe Photoshop and More - Adobe Photoshop and other software from Adobe.  It is subscription-based.  I use an older version of Adobe Photoshop.
